CBSO 2025/26: Classically Black with Laura Mvula & the CBSO

Friday 10 October

Black Lives in Music brings the critically acclaimed Classically Black festival to Birmingham, offering a powerful evening that bridges classical tradition with contemporary Black artistry.

Now in its second year, this bold and ambitious event celebrates the immense contributions of Black composers and performers who have shaped and continue to influence the classical music world.

At the heart of the evening is Laura Mvula, the award-winning singer-songwriter known for her genre-defying sound. Returning to her hometown, she performs alongside the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, bringing her rich harmonies, layered textures, and soulful voice to a brand-new orchestral setting. The collaboration promises to be both intimate and epic—an emotional celebration of musical innovation rooted in heritage.

More than just a concert, Classically Black is a statement. It reimagines what classical music can look and sound like, opening up the stage to new perspectives and untold stories. This is a moment to honour the past, embrace the present, and look boldly to the future of classical music, shaped through the lens of Black culture and creativity.

Expect a transformative night at Symphony Hall—one filled with boundary-pushing performances, cultural resonance, and a deep sense of connection. Whether you’re a classical music enthusiast or discovering it anew, this is an event that will stay with you long after the final note.
